This sample checklist is JUST AN EXAMPLE of items an Expert will investigate.

  • Mare, Stallion, or Gelding
  • Breed
  • Age
  • Height
  • 1-6 Visual Conditioning Rating (Weight/Muscle Tone)
  • Color, Markings, Branding, Scars
  • Owner known history (if available)
  • Signs or History of cribbing or weaving in stall
  • Demeanor/Disposition
  • Typical Energy Level
  • Preference of stall or always turned out
  • Child safe
  • Get along with other horses
  • Trailering, Loading/Unloading
  • Breeding history
  • Preferred tack
  • Level of Broke. If recent, what was the training/breaking method
  • Registration (if applicable)
  • Medical Records/History
    • Ever been lame, colic, or foundered
    • Any surgeries
    • Shots/Worming/Vaccinations
    • Coggins
  • Any recent PPE reports
  • Diet (likes/dislikes)
  • Alone and in Crowd of animals (if applicable)
  • Catching, Tying, Standing
  • Handling / touching body from Head to Tail
  • Lifting legs
  • Take a bath/water spray
  • Describe demeanor and any changes throughout inspection
  • Bite/Kick/Rear/Buck/Bolt/Charge/Show Fear/Head-Shy/Head-Flip/
  • Take a saddle and bridle with ease.
  • Mount with ease
  • Load/Unload in trailer (if available)
  • Attention to cues
  • Neck rein
  • Plow rein
  • Spooky of water, branches, cars, dogs, tractors, etc, (things on a trail ride).
  • Ride cold or need a warm-up
  • Smoothness of gaits in both directions.
  • Stopping, Backing, Turning, Standing.
  • WORK OUT/RIDE for the specific Disciplines the horse is represented to have

  • Hooves
    • unshod: Signs of Founder
    • hoof and pastern angles
    • special shoeing needs/concerns
